I was at a Boy Scout Camporee this weekend. It was organized as fun and games, but the emphasis was on education. Here are the themes as I heard them...
1) Safety: I heard this first from a cub scout, but it was reiterated throughout the event -- no scout could be alone with an adult that wasn't their parent. This wasn't a scarey warning and there were no counselors -- it was just policy. How much money and prestiege would our schools and churches have saved if they were as thoughtful as the BSA?
2) Safety: An Eagle Scout was rescued from a hike gone bad recently. The scouts heard about his mistakes as well as how his training saved him and made his rescue easier. The candor of the leaders will likely cause other scouts to more carefully plan future hikes.
3) Safety: Starting and managing fires.
4) Safety: Proper use of an axe.
5) Safety: Proper use of an air gun.
6) Safety: Proper use of a bow and arrow.
7) Safety: Safe hiking.
Safety: Maps and compass.
9) Tolerance: The scouts learned the golden rule from the perspective of different religions.
10) Public Speaking: Scouts performed skits and sang songs at the close of the jamboree.
11) Perspective: One scout was recognized for having fun at a sport he was not particularly good at.
It was quite a weekend. Strong winds knocked down tents but not spirits. The kids worked as teams to solve problems and complete projects. As we broke camp Sunday morning, all the kids collaborated to leave no trace behind. Sun burnt, tired, and all smiles, our kids parted company a little wiser.
