Over the past few weeks, I have been talking to various people at the HS concerning announcing of scholarships from outside sources. Timberlane does not announce scholarships awarded to students except for those which are part of the Timberlane Scholarship program. Understandably, Timberlane can not announce every scholarship students are awarded. Many students are awarded merit scholarships some of which can be substantial.
There are however some students who have been awarded full tuition scholarships which will not be mentioned. The reason I was given by Ms. DiNola, an assistant principal at the HS, for not announcing these scholarships was there are 100’s of full tuition scholarships awarded to Timberlane students each year. I know National Merit Scholarship winners are offered many scholarships, and students perusing US Military Academy or ROTC are offered many scholarships. My suggestion was to announce only those scholarships to be executed by the students which are for full-tuition. I was again told it could not be done as there were 100’s and it would take too much time. |

Hundreds??? Very hard to believe that over 50 % of the class got full-tuition scholarships. I agree with you -- that level of achievement should be recognized & rewarded with public kudos. And it demonstrates to other students that if they work hard, they too can achieve great scholarships -- it's always helpful to see someone you know and think "I know him/her, I can do that too!"
IMHO
Keep fighting it! |

I don't believe 100's either. I asked the same question multiple ways of Ms DiNola with the same results, 100's of scholarships to our students.
I even sent a follow up email stating the 100's of scholarships and I was never corrected.
One suggestion that Mr. Woodworth seemed to like however was listing college acceptances of the students. There is a wall at the school where students can post where they have commited to. Coe-brown has a list of students/acceptances, on their website which is voluntary. |

At music awards night each Senior from band, orch, choir, etc is called to the stage and a list of their musical accomplishments and where they will be going to college and for what major is read.
It takes forever to go through all the list, but at the end you end up thinking "wow, what a great bunch of kids and almost all of them are gioing on to college". Its a very nice ceremony.

One other point: While I'm sure kids want their friends and teachers to know where they are going on to upon leaving TRSH. I am not sure how many kids and their parents would want their financial details spread around haphazardly. I certainly wouldn't.

Coe Brown has such a list for acceptances. It is Voluntary. Students list all the colleges they are accepted to, it does not mention scholarships.
Scholarship awarding would be done on a voluntary basis. From my experience, full scholarships having nothing to do with financial need. There are groups/colleges which will come to the school to present the awards if asked. If a student getting one of these scholarships wants to have it announced why not? |

100's of full tuition scholarships awarded to Timberlane students each year!!! I just don't believe that statement. I wish the hs would list the colleges that offered full tuition scholarships for future consideration. I've been and watched many award ceremonies and most people are impressed when a student achieves high honors and/or impressive awards such as full tuition scholarships.

Absolutely!!! High achievement should be recognized.

The school should have 3 separate nights for awards: music, sports, and academia. These nights already happen so why not have money awards given that same evening. Music awards already happened and sports night for seniors will be at Sawyers next week. Why not have money awards given on these same nights and allow academia it's own evening? Any thoughts? |

It would be very nice to see the kids awarded their full-tuition scholarships.
TRHSparent, I agree having a list of scholarships awarded would be very helpful during college search for my children It would certainly help the pocketbook.
Kids who are going to college can list their name on the wall. Is there a similar wall for those who choose the military? Timberlane must have a few students that are choosing that option. |

100's of full tuition scholarships awarded to Timberlane students each year?
Is this smoke and mirrors or just a misinformed staff member? I do not think that this is the case with even a Phillips Exeter or Brooks Academy. More students would be going on to college if this were the case. Maybe they just do not want to recognize the acheivers and keep things dummed down. _________________ Le Canard |

The school doesn't want to recognize the "100's of full scholarships" because it might hurt the other student's feelings.
It's not about academics folks, it's about feeling good about yourself...

We are what about 1/4 of the way there? We need to fund a study to determine why everyone does not have a full scholarship. |

| The school should have a better count now. They sent home a form for the students to fill out and bring back to Ms. DiNola with any outside scholarships awarded. Not certian if this is done ever year or not. |
