I'm typing this as I listen to the last school board meeting. Lots of good stuff in there -- including a lunch crisis.

The crisis is not new. The current crisis is the predictable outcome of a 'solution' that many opposed from the onset. Instead of stabilizing cost and improving quality, the TRSD Food Court has resulted in significantly higher prices and unbalanced meals for our kids.

The school board is trying to deal with kids lining up with no balance or a negative balance on their account. Options under consideration include engaging child welfare, hiring a collection agency, and letting the kids go hungry.

I propose that we hire a caterer to serve lunch at the schools. The lunch would be free to the students. There would be a choice between one hot lunch and two sandwich lunches.

Each day, during the first period, each student would choose their lunch. This information would quickly be transmitted to the caterer who would prepare the orders. The lunches would be prepared off site and transfered to the schools at lunch time. Kids would turn in tickets at lunch that were distributed during the selection process as they collected their lunch. They'd eat lunch and leave the cafeteria.

The cost of the meals would be significantly less expensive since there would be no need for on site preparation facilities or staff. There would be no cashiers and minimal book keeping.

The quality of the meals would be better controlled, too, since there would be no a la carte options.

This did not come to me in a dream. When we visited Fall River with the cub scouts, this is exactly how meals were served. My sophomore and I were impressed with 1) how quickly we were served, 2) how good the food was, and 3) how little food was in the trash.
