Moving on Seniors choose divergent paths to the future
By Rebecca Correa
Staff writer

Six local high schools say goodbye to the class of 2008 tonight and tomorrow. Some students knew what they want out of life before they stepped foot in high school, others come up with their master plan with the help of mentors and a few have their futures changed by a twist of fate.

Six seniors talk about their future plans.

PLAISTOW — Fortuity helped Emily DeBaun plan her future.

The 17-year-old will graduate from the Timberlane Regional High School today and head to an Ivy League school this fall.

But the Sandown resident isn't a student who spent her life dreaming of going to an Ivy League school. She just knew she wanted a school with a good science program.

"It kind of just happened that way," she said. "It's kind of a fluke thing I ended up at Dartmouth, I didn't even decide to apply until a week before applications were due."

The honor student, who spent her years at Timberlane on the math team, Drama Club, honor society and orchestra, had an especially hard time deciding if she should go to Dartmouth or several schools she applied to in the Boston area.

"That was my one reservation about Dartmouth," she said. "I had thought it would be a healthy experience to go to a slightly more urban area, but I love it in New Hampshire and when we went back to visit the school I liked it on a gut level."

As graduation nears, she said it's starting to sink in that she will be leaving her friends from the past 12 years behind.

"All of (my friends) did their own thing," she said. "We're pretty scattered all over the country, I don't think we were thinking about (leaving each other) at the time but now we're graduating and we're starting to realize how spread out we are."

DeBaun plans to major in cognitive science, but also hopes to study education and secure a spot in the school's orchestra.

I'm happy that somebody from TRSD is headed to Dartmouth College.
