Life in a fishbowl Workshops put environment into focus

DANVILLE — Danville Elementary School teachers put aside traditional lessons recently in favor of workshops designed to teach students about their environment.

Students had a lot of choices. There were 27 workshops and each student attended three or four of them.

There was "Let's Go Buggy," led by kindergarten teacher Stephanie Mezquita, in which students learned about their favorite bugs and created one to take home.

Technology teacher Meghan Rousseau led students in "Animal Habitat Webquest," an online adventure designed to teach students all about animals.

"I did a webquest and researched a kangaroo rat," fourth-grader Amanda Savina said. "It hops like a kangaroo and looks like a rat."

Second-grader Christopher Gilardi used a plastic coffee cam, a Jell-O cup, two plastic cups, straws and a spoon to design and build a creature.

"His name is Spider Bat 414121," Christopher said. "He fixes cars, cleans the air and fixes just about anything."

Fourth-grader Kaleigh McLaughlin said her favorite activity was a virtual trip to the Akron Zoo.

"I got to see endangered animals, including a chinchilla and a poison dart frog," she said.

Kyle Carter also enjoyed the virtual field trip.

"The chinchilla's fur is so soft, and it takes 100 to 300 of them to make a coat, depending on their size," he said.

Second-grader Matthew Wilson said he enjoyed "Life in A Fishbowl." Students learned what makes a healthy fish habitat in the ocean or in fresh water.

"We made a fish out of paper and a fishbowl out of a container, seashells, sand, and sea glass," he said.

Enrichment teacher Christy Hubley organized the event. She had high praise for the hard work the teachers and staff members put into making the day such a success.

"There was a wide variety of workshops for the children to choose from," Hubley said. "The students had a lot of fun and they learned a lot, too."
