| New post on DanvilleDelivery.com seems to soften oposition to Block Scheduling. I can't disagree. Scroll down to the article titledh The Heretic to read about Peg Ralph's melt down at the meeting. I've met her many times and have trouble believing the account, but, if it's accurate, I think we may be influencing SAU 55. Good for us! |

These people are really clueless. If Len upsets them so much, the best tactic would actually be to ignore him. _________________ Curt Springer

I guess that depends on the reason they are upset. If Peg Ralph and the Curriculum committee are upset that they are being portrayed inaccurately, then the best solution would be to turn on a camera (not sure if this would be allowed at a country club). If they are upset because he is 'exposing' them, I agree that it would be best to ignore him -- I speculated that they would do exactly that on another forum waaaaay back in March. Sage advice, eh?
My gut tells me that they are not being portrayed inaccurately. The usual suspects have complained about Len and the website, but are not disputing the details.
Maybe it's a good cop / bad cop ploy? Big Bad Peg Ralph drops the hammer in public then Don Woodworth plays nice behind closed doors to win support for his project...
OK. Maybe not. Anyone want to talk about block scheduling? I think I like the idea of 'blocking' complimentary activities together. This is not what I think of when I think of BS. Bundling math with physics or computer science makes sense to me -- practical application or 'lab' to supplement book work would probably improve understanding and retention. I can't see any other way to make math work in a BS environment. I like math, but after 45 minutes of lecture, I'm glazing over. I think it would be a waste of time to use the rest of the block for homework.
I did not realize 4x4 bs included 'short blocks.' I think these would be fine for year-round-math. You'd have to have math teachers who could teach something else the rest of the day, but I suspect math majors have computer skills and could probably teach science. I'm guessing science teachers could teach less advanced math classes as well. Of course, that sounds like the bundling idea.
I don't think I expect employees of the SAU to post on any of these forums or blogs, but maybe we should start a topic for BS questions and concerns -- a list rather than a discussion -- since they apparently 'lurk.'
Maybe another topic for things people see or hear about the schools that they do not like -- like the half days or tv in the classroom or star wars play at the high school. If they read these things, maybe they will fix them? |

Bundling classes together:
For classes like American Studies or World Studies which are 'blocked" or 2 period classes, which cover a English class and Social studies classes, these classes have 2 teachers one fully qualified in English and one in Social Studies.
As far as the Alternative schedule concept, they are still in the Wish List phase from what I can see. They have a wish of what they want to do but no real information.
When woodworth was asked about a sample schedule at the SB meeting they did not have one. Based on some simple calculations, it seems that they are going to need more teachers and more space to hold these classes. They have also not talked about lunch yet. How are they going to feed all those kids, Right now they have something like 6 20minute periods to feed them.
If the SB is not careful the SAU will pull a fast one on them, give them enough information about BS get them to approve it then come back to the SB asking for more money to fully implement it. |
