Have you read Len Mullen's account of the May 14 TRSD Curriculum Committee?

I was appalled to read that this took place at a private location, a restaurant no less where one is expected to pay $15 to sit at the table.

I'm not saying it was necessarily illegal. If it were posted in two public places and / or advertised in a newspaper with circulation in the four towns, and if the public would have been allowed to attend without charge, then it would have met the letter of the open meetings and records law (RSA 91-A). But definitely not the spirit of the law. I have to wonder, what if 30 TRSD residents showed up with the intent of attending the meeting, as was their right under the law, but with no intent of eating dinner at this private facility. How would they have been accommodated? Would management have somehow placed 30 chairs in the dining room with no advance notice? Would there have been room to seat these people so that could actually hear what was being said during the meeting? What if somebody started videotaping the "meeting", would management have allowed that?

How often does the curriculum committee meet? Do they always do it this way, or was this a special occasion? I think it's a very bad idea to mix district business and social functions in one event. I like to have a drink with dinner. I wouldn't want to wait for the adjournment of the business meeting as I do think about driving. So if I were a member of the committee, I would probably have been drinking wine during the business meeting. Maybe some would find that inappropriate. What I find inappropriate is that I would even have to think about this.

I'm really surprised nobody else has posted anything about this before now. There was a flap in Salem recently when their BOS decided to meet at the law office of one of its members in Andover, Mass.

I hope Len will obtain and post the minutes of this "meeting" as soon as possible after they have been filed (within 5 business days). Last month we learned from his web site that the chairman of the budget committee fundamentally misunderstands the role and power of his committee. This month we learned that the curriculum committee meets in private locations. What will we learn next month?

I can't trust the collective judgment of these committees on the matters entrusted to them when they get fundamental matters so wrong.

I've wanted to go there for dinner. I would have gladly gone for $15.00 to check out the food, and hear about their latest plans.

Did anyone see a notice for this meeting? If so, where was it posted?

I found this flyer about the Curriculum and Assessment Committee on the TRSD web site. Looks professionally produced, meant to be folded twice. It is not dated.

After I posted Stranger in a Strange Land, the chair of the budget committee emailed me that, "it probably is not necessary to report on the conversations of the committee and only the meeting minutes."

Len reported on comments of a social nature. But they were made at a public meeting. The problem here is not Len's reporting, but the mixing of business and pleasure in one event.

And until such time that the chair of the budget committee demonstrates that he understands the budget committee's statutory role, he would be well-advised not to give advice to other committee members on how to conduct themselves or what to post on their personal web sites.

I have to say that it concerns me when public officials try to be too controling of what gets reported on from public meetings. If you done't want something you say to be made public perhaps you should think about not saying it before you ask someone to not report it.
