Insipred by an article about the efforts to reduce waste sent to landfills from the cafe's at the company I work for I wonder if Timberlane has given any thought to doing something similar. Apparently there are compostable utensals and plates that can be used. Also frying oil can be sold to biodesiel companies. Some places (University of Washington apparently) save money this way. But as an educational organization I think it would be great for the district to model good behavior.

While we're at it perhaps solar hot water heaters? Given that schools are mostly used during the day this might save some real money over time.

Thoughts?

In theory, it sounds like a good idea, but who is going to pay for these solar panels?

Are the utility companies offering kick-backs for these?

I heard that the district did receive money from the electric company when the new florescent bulbs were installed a couple of years ago.

Are the compostable utensils and plates more expensive?

There are some electric companies giving rebates for solar. Also I suspect that during the summer months the district might be able to sell power to the electric companies. The schools will be using less power then. If we bond the purchace the cost savings may pay for themselves during the life of the bond.

Solar hot water heaters do not generate electricity. They heat water for domestic hot water use. Other than the kitchen, is there a significant hot water use in any of our schools??

Solar hot water panels are SIGNIFCANTLY less expensive than photovoltaic panels, which generate electricty. they are totally different things.

On another energy savings note - the outdoor lighting wastes a tremendous amount of energy.

1) The "security" lights are aimed almost horizontally such that almost half of the light goes out across the rooftop or up into the sky. If they just aimed the lamps lower, they could replace the bulbs with ones using half the energy and still put juts as much lightonto the ground!

2) Once folks are gone, why do we need any outdoor lighting?? Don't tell me security - the lights just make it easier for vandals to see their "targets". If the outdoor lighting was activated by motion sensors then it would only come on when someone was in the area. A lit light would then show neighbors and passing police that someone was present at odd hours. This would cut energy costs dramatically and improve security.

I teach my children to wash their hands with hot water.
So there's a use beyond the kitchen's of the schools.

I sure hope that the showers in the locker rooms get some usage and use hot water. Please tell my I'm not wrong. Smile

I do think we should be thinking long term and not just short term when we think about solar power or heating.

I'm not aware of any child that takes a shower after PE class.
Some will reapply deodorant and or body spray.

Word is the showers are gross..

My how things have changed. When I was in HS no one would associate with someone who did not shower after PE. How/why are the showers gross?

I've toured the HS and MS locker rooms (both boys and girls).
The girls showers don't get used. They are gross.
The lockers in the locker rooms are barely wide enough to place a sneaker. There's definitely no room for a gym bag in those.

Last year the school received some used lockers from another school district in MA that was going to recycle them. Luckily, one of the HS custodians knew of this and was able to get those lockers "recycled" to Timberlane.

My two student atheletes do not use the showers at school, done at home.

Meeting held by new AD went well last night for atheletes and parents at the gym. Large group meeting then teams broke out to seperate rooms with coachs and parents to cover, rules, regulations, eligebility, conduct etc.

Bathrooms near gym and meeting rooms were all closed for cleaning the entire evening, no sense letting people use them and get them dirty I guess.
